Impossible; for how many people did you know who refracted your own light to you?

chances
Taking one’s chances is like taking a bath, because sometimes you end
up feeling comfortable and warm, and sometimes there is something
terrible lurking around that you cannot see until it is too late and you
can do nothing else but scream and cling to a plastic duck.

otherwise
the room he brings into you
the room befalls you
like the fir trees he trues her
she nears him like the firs
if one vanishes one stays
if one stays the other will or will not vanish
otherwise my beautiful green fly
otherwise not a leaf stirs

the eyes that see so sharply
Skinlessness…makes a poet. One must have the gift of language, but
even a great gift is useless without the other curse: the eyes that see
so sharply they often want to close.

everything
Everything else remained the same. This is why, you said, there was no fiction.

where it was
All water has a perfect memory & is forever trying to get back to where it was.

understand
Understand, I love you, even as I turn from you like this, stumbling breathless down a dim and disappearing street behind a man who squints at house numbers, bewildered, about to say something I can almost hear.

possibility
This is what you learned in graduate school: In every assumption is contained the possibility of its opposite.

you are the blood flowing through my fingers, all through the soil & up in those trees.

love: animals
I'm completely in love with The Animal Print Shop by Sharon Montrose. Her photography of animals is simple & clean which highlights their individual intricacies & beauty. All of the animals she photographs are either rescued or owned by loving animal caretakers who ensure their well-being throughout the photography sessions. Through her work, Montrose supports animal welfare programs such as animal rescue & wildlife education.
Her prints are available in a variety of sizes so they range in price from the very the affordable to the more expensive. Be sure to check her site out! Her animals are a sight to behold.

my father the painter
My dad has many random hobbies (such as White Gate Vineyards) & his latest undertaking is painting. Above is a piece he made for me recently that I'm very proud to display. Nautical art is one of my greatest loves so it's absolutely perfect. Thanks dad.

the heavy sleep of the perfectly loved
As far as the space between word and word,
as the heavy sleep of the perfectly loved
& the sirens of wars no one living can remember,
as far as this room, where no words have been spoken,
you are as far as invention, & I am as far as memory.

& kiss him back to strength, back to a boy
This is the first sonnet in Yusef Komunyakaa's amazing book of poems, WARHORSES, which changed my life in 2009. He is truly one of the best.
